National Meeting of Community Foundations of Canada – Impressions from Halifax

Jun 6, 2025

Over 1,000 participants from across Canada – including numerous representatives from British Columbia – gathered in Halifax this spring for the Community Foundations of Canada’s national conference. Marc Doll represented Quadra Island and reported on the highlights of the event, including inspiring keynote speakers and contributions from Indigenous representatives, as well as new challenges in the areas of climate action, regulations for non-profit organizations, and community building.

Key topics:

  • The power of community infrastructure: Equally supporting centers, havens, and gathering places to foster connections and well-being.
  • Changing perspectives of the federal government: Concerns about the devaluation of social capital under the new administration.
  • Climate leadership: How foundations are reducing their carbon footprint and investing with sustainability in mind.
  • Truth and reconciliation: Emotional and powerful stories from survivors of residential schools.
  • Vital Signs: Reaffirming the importance of social relationships, volunteerism, and mental health.

Next time you see Marc, he’ll be happy to give you more background information—and don’t forget to ask him about the food! Or visit the website of the Community Foundations of Canada: communityfoundations.ca/initiatives/illuminate-2025/
