Charitable Purposes

The Quadra Island Foundation (QIF) serves the population of Quadra Island and the outer Discovery Islands in BC. As a grant-making public charity, QIF is dedicated to “Making Island Life Better” through a) leadership; b) funding; and c) capacity-building. As a community foundation, QIF plays a key role in identifying and addressing both immediate and long-term community needs. QIF supports a number of broad-based charitable purposes targeting at-risk populations including:

  1. To receive and maintain a fund or funds and to apply all or part of the principal and income therefrom, from time to time, including through qualifying disbursements as defined in subsection 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada).
  2. To build healthy, vibrant, sustainable and inclusive communities primarily for the benefit of the residents of Quadra Island and surrounding area by:
    1. advancing education including by providing scholarships, bursaries, awards and other forms of assistance to students;
    2. advancing education including by providing training, courses, seminars, workshops, and programs that build individual citizens’ capacity for leadership and effective participation in community life;
    3. relieving poverty including by operating and maintaining shelters for the homeless, and providing residential accommodation below market rate, as well as support and incidental facilities, to individuals or families who are in need;
    4. relieving poverty including by providing financial assistance and/or basic necessities of life, including food, clean water, clothing, and shelter, to individuals or families who are experiencing poverty, of low income, or in need;
    5. addressing and preventing specific problems faced by children and youth, such as bullying, peer pressure, substance abuse, low self-esteem, victimization, and unemployment, including by providing programs to children and youth who are shown to need assistance;
    6. addressing and preventing specific problems faced by families including by providing counselling, mentoring programs, outreach programs, workshops, seminars, and other support to individuals and families affected by such problems;
    7. addressing and preventing specific problems faced by equity-seeking groups by providing culturally-appropriate programs, specialized services, and other supports for such populations;
    8. relieving conditions associated with disability, and/or conditions attributed to being aged, including by providing specialized services, facilities, and programming for such populations;
    9. providing financial and material relief to the victims of natural disasters or other sudden catastrophes;
    10. protecting the environment for the benefit of the public by habitat restoration and the conservation of natural resources;
    11. promoting the welfare of animals for the benefit of the public by the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals and stray, abandoned, abused or surrendered animals;
    12. providing public amenities including by establishing and maintaining parks, children’s playgrounds, memorial gardens, multi-use recreational facilities, and museums primarily for the residents of Quadra Island and surrounding area;
    13. protecting and preserving significant heritage sites including by restoring, developing and maintaining heritage sites on Quadra Island;
    14. increasing the public’s awareness and support for volunteerism and the voluntary sector including by providing information and resources on volunteering and civic engagement.
    15. Promoting the efficiency and effectiveness of other registered charities providing services primarily for the benefit of Quadra Island and surrounding area residents;
    16. addressing and preventing the negative impacts of climate change on local water supplies and food systems for the benefit of the local residents;
    17. Advancing the welfare of the community by supporting programs, initiatives and research that strengthen local governance capacity, foster inclusive community decision-making, and build collaborations between residents, organizations, and local institutions, for the benefit of the public.
  3. To do all such things as are incidental and ancillary to the attainment of the foregoing purposes and the exercise of the powers of the Quadra Island Foundation.
